Smelling the Soup

First graders are very excited to learn! They also get wound up and noisy easily. We do two things in our classroom to calm ourselves down so we are ready to learn. Sometimes, we take a quiet moment. This is when the lights go off, we put our heads down, we are still and silent for a few minutes. Other times, we 'smell the soup.' This is something you can do at home if you need to calm down your child. Everyone cups their hands as if they are holding a bowl of soup. Then we all take a long, slow breath in as though smelling soup. Next, it's time to breath out very slowly as though cooling the soup. It's important to let the air out slowly so the soup doesn't come out of the bowl. Doing this a few times in a row almost always calms us down.
